Autograph letter from Hannah More, [Holywell House, St. Albans], to Mrs. Pepys [manuscript], [1784 March].

Note at top of letter: To Mrs. Pepys with a P[ai]r of Stockings. Dedicates the enclosed work [The bas blanc], the fruit of a few days leisure at St. Albans, to either of her little children. It is formed on the best precepts of the great masters of the Epopoeia. Provides a literay analysis of it. She is desirous to deposit it in the Pepys Collection, hoping that it may be found as useful as many a black letter manuscript of more recondite learning.

Hannah More, one of five sisters, taught at her family's school in Bristol, England. She became prominent in London's Bluestocking circle from 1774 onward, and was also a friend of Samuel Johnson. Her work soon moved from poetry and drama to the production of numerous popular religious books and tracts.
